Cancun most searched-for beach destination by national tourists

Cancun, Q.R. — The Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) estimated that during the holiday period, the hotel occupancy rate averaged 58 percent around the country. They say that it was Mexico’s beach destinations that received a majority of tourists.

An Assist Card report highlights that in recent months, domestic tourism increased significantly with online search results showing Cancun as the most searched-for vacation destination. Acapulco took second as the most searched-for by locals, which the report says, is likely due to its proximity to Mexico City.

Acapulco continues to be a good option for the country’s centrally located residents. Tijuana also appeared in the search trends since a new travel feature for locals are nearby places that can be reached by car.

For this reason, the agency says the border city in northern Mexico was a good alternative for those who live near that region. In recent years, its gastronomic choices and cultural life have gained importance as a tourist attraction.

The golden beaches of Mazatlán took fourth place as the most searched-for to spend the holidays, while the city of Monterrey was placed fifth as a different alternative to the sun and the beach choices. Monterrey is also known for its gastronomic and cultural choices.

At the end of last year, Expedia also reported that Cancun was the top vacation destination choice for Americans for the 2021 travel season.
