Cancun inmates repay fines by removing sargassum

Cancun, Q.R. — As a way to clean beaches and repay fines, inmates from Cancun’s El Tortio have been participating in sargassum removal.

Approximately 50 low-risk inmates hit the beaches of Cancun for two days of sargassum removal, which helps with city efforts. The manual labor also helps them to repay outstanding fines issued for their offenses.

The two-day program was headed by authorities of the City of Benito Juárez who determined that minor offenders can pay their fines by cleaning sargassum from city the beaches. With this option, offenders also avoid jail hours at the detention center of El Torito.

The inmates were sent to areas with greater concentrations of sargassum to help with its removal.
