Cancun hotel project collapses on workers

Cancun, Q.R. — The collapse of a hotel under construction has left nine people injured. The collapse happened Tuesday around noon at Puerto del Mar in Puerto Juarez.

Emergency 911 activated a Red Code alert after receiving notice that a hotel construction project collapsed. Rescue units were sent to the site.

Officials with Civil Protection say that the top level of a 12-level hotel collapsed on workers. A total of nine people were injured with seven being taken hospitals. Two of the injured were treated on site for minor injuries.

The project is the new El Mar Hotel of the Hyatt group in Puerto del Mar.

Civil Protection says the hotel construction project in the residential area has been closed to avoid additional risk to construction workers. They also need time to investigate the accident and determine the reason for the collapse.

They said that a structural expert will be brought in to review the building.

A total of 200 workers were evacuated off the site Tuesday when the top of the building failed.

This is not the first time a construction project has collapsed after heavy rains. In September of 2017, a section of concrete of the Xcaret hotel fell after days of rain, killing one woman.
