Cancun hotel association beginning to see advanced reservations

Cancun, Q.R. — The reactivation of international travel has seen tourists book reservations in advance rather than last minute. At the beginning of the pandemic reactivation phase, a majority of international travelers were booking on short notice, however now, Cancun hotels are seeing reservations months in advance.

According to the Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, hotels are anticipating occupancy rates in excess of 60 percent for the summer season. The figures come with the continued advanced bookings.

“We already have reservations into August, and every day, hotels report on the books the occupations already scheduled for those dates,” said hotel association head Javier Aranda.

He said last June, reservations were made with very few days in advance, which kept hotels uncertain, but now, hotels are seeing reservations in advance.

Darío Flota Ocampo, director of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council says they are also anticipating the recovery of the European market for the summer holiday season. He says with the incorporation of more flights from different countries, they estimate at least half million visitors.

“This market, which is one of the last to recover, has the highest season from June to September,” he said.

“The health protocols in the hotels are working, but since more cases are occurring, stricter measures have to be taken which will allow us to continue with the economic reactivation,” he added.

Currently, the Cancun International Airport has connections to 32 U.S. airports, more than in 2019.

“There is mutual support, so today we have 32 airports in the United States directly connected to Cancun, a much higher number than before the pandemic,” he said adding that Cozumel has nine direct flights with US cities.
