Cancun, Q.R. — A freak accident involving a Zeta Gas truck resulted in the explosion of 33 portable gas tanks.
The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday inside the industrial grounds of Zeda Gas in Cancun when one of their trucks experienced a short circuit and caught fire. The cabin of the truck began to burn which almost immediately ignited seven filled gas cylinders in the trailer of the vehicle.
The fire and exploding cylinders were quickly reported to the Benito Juarez Fire Department. Local fire crews arrived on the scene within 10 minutes and were eventually able to get things under control, but not before a total of 33 gas cylinders exploded.
The firefighters battled the hot flames for most of the day, finally putting an end to additional gas explosion threats at around 2:30 that afternoon.
Civil Protection did a final inspection of the premises and has closed it temporarily until other state officials have a chance to investigate and generate reports.
Civil Protection did say however, that this was the first fire of its kind this year. While they work with various hazardous material on a near daily basis, this was the first gas fire of 2015.
Due to the timeliness of the fire response team combined with it being a Sunday and no personnel were on site, the Mexican Red Cross said there were no injuries.
