The city of Cancun turns 45 on April 20, 2015. Numerous organizers along with founders of the city will hold various events in and around Cancun from the 17th to the 22nd.
The six days of activities will give local Cancunense a chance to participate in the city’s birthday celebrations. The calendar of activities will begin on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. at the Casa de la Cultura. This event is a meeting of eight city founders who will discuss Cancun’s economic importance.
On Saturday, April 18, people are invited to Pioneer Monument on the Boulevard Luis Donaldo Colosio. Here a memorial wreath will be laid to honor those who died in the 1970 and 80s when Cancun was being created.
Everyone is invited to attend the largest picnic the city has ever seen. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Cancun Fonatur Park located between Tulum and Bonampak avenues. The picnic will kick off with artistic and musical performances by both local and international communities. At noon, they will sing in “Song of Love Cancun” and then cut the anniversary cake before continuing with music. The picnic will go until 4:00 p.m.
At 5:00 p.m. the city will hold a parade beginning at the fire station on Avenue Chichen Itza and will end at the foundational area. Parade participants are the youth group “Up with People”, each one dressed in their native state’s regional costume.
History and Identity
On Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22, at the University of the South, a series of lectures called Cancún, between history and identity, will be given including identities in Cancun, sustainable social construction, constructed identity and dynamic identity.
“We have three main events during the festival of Cancun, which begins with the founding roundtable, the wreath and picnic. The vast majority of those who live the experience of a new city will meet,” said Carlos Bazan Castro , president of the group founders of Cancun.
“We invite you to participate in the largest picnic in Cancun, which will have a very comprehensive artistic program. We want to share in the commemorative cake to all who are coming to Cancun and are founders of a multicultural city that identifies us, because Cancun is filled with people from around the world,”noted Cynthia Santamaria, spokeswoman Founders of Cancun.
