Cancun beach sees first turtle eggs ahead of official season

Cancún, Q.R. – Reports of the first turtle eggs of the season have been discovered on a Cancun beach.

The first turtle nest of the season was monitored on a beach in the Cancun Hotel Zone around 11:00 p.m. Tuesday night. The female leatherback measured in at 144 cm (56.6inches) in length and 106 (41.7 inches) wide.

Head of Dirección General de Ecología, Jeannina Medrano Galindo, said that 71 eggs were laid in the sand, all of which were moved to a protected zone.

“We maintain a constant vigilance to avoid any setback with these species, which in the case of the leatherback turtle, is the most uncommon to reach the beaches of Benito Juarez, so we guarantee special care in order to have the greatest number of protected nests,” she explained.

She said that this sea turtle arrived early, noting that turtle season officially begins May 1. However, since her arrival, permanent monitoring of the 12 kms of beaches from Cancun to Punta Nizuc are now in effect from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. This monitoring is done with support of the area hotels who report sighted nesting activities.
