Cancun 2015 hurricane committee prepares for tourists

Authorities responsible for protecting tourists in Cancun during hurricane season are gearing up.

The tourism subcommittee for hurricanes has filed an inventory of both human and material resources with a list of possible needs for the upcoming 2015 Atlantic hurricane season.

There are more than 35 communities involved in the tourist hurricane program including the National Migration Institute, Federal Police and the federal authorities as well as dozens of businesses and services to third parties operating in the Cancun International Airport.

In the event of a hurricane, the Mexican Association of Travel Agencies (AMAV), Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Directorate of Civil Aviation and the Association of Hotels are the main organizations involved in providing care and welfare of the tourists visiting Cancun and the Riviera Maya. Along with ensuring proper shelter, they are also responsible for ensuring the coordination of airlines at the Cancun International Airport.

Office for Tourism Benito Juarez says, “It is important to be on guard against any weather contingency, to meet immediately meet the primary needs of tourists because in an emergency, we must work to expedite the process if necessary.”

Communication is the main working tool for agencies, organizations, companies and consulates by speaking the same language, especially as airlines report on the availability of seats and flights in case of an evacuation.

Civil Protection explains that “the coordination committee and public relations maintain direct communication with industry associations and tourism authorities.”

The Atlantic hurricane season for Cancun and the Riviera Maya — including high tourist areas of Puerto Morelos, Playa del Caremen, Puerto Aventuras and Tulum — begins June 1 and ends officially on 30 November, however, the entire region can experience harsh tropical storms well into December.

The names chosen for this year’s storms are Ana, Bill, Claudette, Danny, Erika, Fred, Grace, Henri, Ida, Joaquin Kate, Larry, Mindy, Nochola, Odette, Peter, Rose, Sam, Teresa, Victor and Wanda.
