Canadian travel to Cancun increases despite currency rates

Cancun, Q.R. – Despite the strong US dollar, Canadian tourism to Cancun and the Riviera Maya has seen an increase in the first quarter of this year.

According to figures from the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation, the Cancun International Airport has seen an increase of Canadian travelers by 20 percent over the same time last year.

These figures have exceeded the 9 percent anticipated growth for Canadian travelers into the region. Between January and April of 2016, Sunwing has brought the most visitors with Toronto leading the way with just over 111,000 tourists to Cancun and the Riviera Maya already this year.

Toronto is one of 14 cities where Cancun and the Riviera Maya receive visitors, with Canada being the second largest tourism group for the Mexican Caribbean.

In the first three months of the year, approximately 315,000 passengers have arrived from Canada compared to the 254,000 who did so in 2014 during the same period.

From January to April of 2016, Toronto lead the way with the most visitors to Cancun and the Riviera Maya followed by Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver.
