Canadian man drowns after warnings ignored

Cancun, Q.R. – A Canadian tourist has drowned off the shores of a Cancun hotel after ignoring red flag warnings posted along the beach.

On Wednesday, a Canadian identified as Zoltan Zadori from Kitchener, Ontario drowned while swimming in the sea outside his hotel at Grand Oasis Sens in the Cancun Hotel Zone. The man entered the water with his wife, Cindy McPherson, ignoring the red flag warnings of strong waves.

Emergency 066 was called at 11:25 a.m. when a person was reported drowning. Paramedics arrived to find a man lying on the beach without vital signs.

The on-duty lifeguard acknowledged seeing the pair enter the swelling waters when he began whistling at them to leave the water and return to shore, however, the pair ignored his warnings. McPherson admitted the waves were strong and kept pulling them further out.

The lifeguard entered the water to retrieve the man and woman, but the man was quickly swept under by strong sea currents and dragged out further. Although both were eventually pulled to shore, the lifeguard was able to rescue only the woman.

McPherson remains in Cancun. The body of the deceased has been taken to the Forensic Medical Services.
