Canadian cruise ship passenger drowns snorkeling at Mahahual

Mahahual, Q.R. — A Canadian man who was a cruise ship passenger drowned Thursday while snorkeling in the sea at Mahahual.

The Canadian tourist had disembarked from aboard the Norwegian Getaway cruise ship to enjoy a snorkeling shore excursion. While in the water, the man was hit by a wave that he was unable to fight.

CostaMed paramedics arrived on scene after a witness on the beach called Emergency 911. The accident happened at approximately 1:00 p.m. at kilometer 2.6 of Mahahual-Xcalak beach where he was snorkeling.

Paramedics performed CPR but were unable to revive him. The man has been identified at 64-year-old Jacques Bernier of Quebec, Canada.

The man was pronounced on the beach. Municipal police proceeded to cordon off the area to complete proceedings.
