Canada’s head of UN commission resigns amid Gaza inquiry

On Monday night, Canadian law professor William Schabas, resigned as head of a UN commission.

A spokesman for the UN Human Rights Council says Schabas, who was part of a commission tasked with investigating Gaza war crimes from last year, handed in his resignation.

His appointment to head the commission drew strong opposition from both the Harper government and from Israel with 30 complaints from Israel accusing Schabas of “clear and documented bias against Israel, citing a “contractual relationship with the Palestinian side” prior to becoming head of the commission.

In his resignation letter, Schabas said that he’d received $1,300 in 2012 for his legal opinion for the Palestine Liberation Organization.
