Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Tourism director for Solidarity says that bookings for winter vacations have already begun in great strides, with few cancellations and a busy January and February.
Director of Municipal Tourism, María del Rocío Ocampo Colmenares, said that despite factors over the summer, there have been no mass cancellations adding that more and more reservations are being made for Playa del Carmen.
She says that while the US market is important, Playa del Carmen attracts other foreign markets including “the European and Canadian markets which currently exceed US bookings.”
Ocampo Colmenares says that there have been cancellations, that cannot be denied, but adds that many Canadians have already booked vacations into January and February, which is a lot earlier than normal, pointing out that winter in Canada started early this year.
She says that reservations from Europe also remain steady without any cancellations.
“I think that despite the few cancellations we have experienced, it will be a good winter season with an organic increase of tourists,” said María del Rocío Ocampo.
In regard to reports that the summer of 2018 is expected to be a difficult one for tourism, she explained that to combat this, municipal tourism officials began promoting the region a month ago, visiting destinations that offer direct flights to Cancun.
She says that local places such as Monterrey, Guadalajara, León, Querétaro and Mexico City were also on the list and were visited to help promote the sun and beach destinations, which she adds, are strategies to deal with the difficulties that could come next summer.
