Bruce Jenner has made it official with the confirmation, “I am a woman.” The 65-year old former Olympian and reality TV star said that he finally identifies himself as a woman, something that has created the most high-profile American to come out as a transgender.
“My whole life has been getting me ready for this. It’s not just the last few years, as they’ve been treating me, as a joke,” Jenner said, referring to the heavy tabloid press, which has surrounded him. “My whole life has prepared me for this moment so I want to take advantage of it and do the right thing.”
In an interview with Diane Sawyer, she asked “Are you a woman?” to which Jenner replied, “Yes, for all intents and purposes I am a woman.”
“People look at me differently,” Jenner added. “They can see you as this macho male, but my heart and my soul, and everything that I do in life, it is part of me, that female side is part of me. That’s who I am.”
A few months ago, Jenner went on ABC’s 20/20 to confirm months of public speculation that he was indeed transitioning to be a woman.
During his interview with Diane Sawyer, an emotional Jenner said he waited many years to come out with his transition because he did not “want to disappoint people.”
Jenner did not make a request that he be addressed as any preference, but Sawyer did say that for the interview, Jenner asked that the public use he or him.
Bruce Jenner has been married and divorced three times. He is a parent to six children, four stepchildren and two biological. Jenner confirms that he has always been attracted to women, that he is not gay and that he has never been with a man.
Jenner’s first two wives have sent him messages of support while wife number three, Kris Jenner, has refused to comment.
