Merida, Yucatán — Officers from the anti-corruption unit of Quintana Roo have arrested the former head of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (Sintra).
The former director of infrastructure for the state of Quintana Roo, Mario Castro Basto, was arrested in Merida Sunday afternoon due to an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Castro Basto, who was director of Sintra during the Borge administration, was taken into custody Sunday by officials of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor of Quintana Roo.
Mario Castro Basto is accused of irregular performance of the public function while in office. He was arrested and transferred to Chetumal where at 5:10 p.m., he arrived at the Attorney General’s Office as a detainee.
He was placed inside the Chetumal prison at 6:20 p.m. where he will remain until being presented before a judge. He is accused of diverting more than 300 million peso of public money and another 400 million peso in embezzlement.
