Cancun, Q.R. — As with Mexican culture, many people will participate in the annual burning of the muñeco de año viejo or doll of the old year to bid farewell to the previous year and welcome the new.
While the purchase of piñatas is a common way to celebrate, many people also make their own muñecos viejos (old dolls), this year adding former Governor Roberto Borge Angulo to the mix. Several families have been noted as creating their own Borge doll for the traditional burn to bid goodbye to bitter omens from the year, hoping that the upcoming year will be better.
The dolls formed into a resemblance of Borge Angulo are outfitted with signs saying “Selling land cheap. Do you want some?” The burning of the muñeco de año viejo takes place at midnight on December 31.
Civil Protection is reminding people to be cautious when celebrating the traditional burning of the muñeco de año viejo, and to not use firecrackers or other explosive devices inside the dolls.
State officials have said that the former governor of Quintana Roo, Roberto Borge, will be extradited back to Mexico on January 4.
