Chetumal, Q.R. — The body of a deceased dolphin appeared off a shore in Chetumal Friday. The unusual discovery has marine life specialists trying to figure out what caused the death.
The dolphin was found in the early morning hours in the Bay of Chetumal between the state congress and the lighthouse. Melvin Reyes Trejo, non-commissioned officer of the State Preventive Police, commented that the dolphin was seen floating dead from a distance, something that was not normal for the area of Chetumal.
Specialists of the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas recovered the body from the sea, which they say, was without injuries and likely dead for about two days.
The body has been taken to facilities at the University of Quintana Roo where they will perform studies to determine the cause of death.
The body was found by Public Service employees of Othón P. Blanco who were performing cleaning work in the area.
In June, several people push a stranded dolphin back out to sea after the mammal became stuck on sand on a beach at Playacar in Playa del Carmen.
