Beach recovery project earmarked for the Cancun Hotel Zone

Cancun, Q.R. — A sand recovery project for several areas of the Cancun Hotel Zone has been earmarked by the federation. Proyectos México reports that federal officials will begin with the recovery of sand along the north coast of Cancun in the hotel zone.

The project details it will consist of “design, operation and maintenance of a beach recovery project in Cancun north” with an investment of 813.4 million peso that must be completed in 2021.

According to the project “0282 Recovery of the Cancun North Beach”, nearly 3 kilometers of beach, as well as the filling of two trenches using 1.5 billion cubic meters of sand, is part of the planned rehabilitation project.

The sand is to be extracted with self-propelled dredges using sand from an environmentally authorized marine bank for its subsequent dumping in the coastal area of Cancun North. The objective is to create sufficient beach widths to preserve the Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre (Zofemat) and its existing infrastructure.

The public-private project is headed by the Federal Tourism Secretariat (Sectur) through the Undersecretariat for Innovation and Tourism Development.
