Authorities planning to meet next week to discuss alternate Maya Train route through Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Next week, state authorities will meet with federal authorities regarding a possible change to the Playa del Carmen section of Maya Train. The meeting, which does not have an official date, was said likely to happen next week after the request of Riviera Maya businessmen to consider a different route.

Governor Carlos Joaquín said that he also is in favor of the train “not going through the cities,” anticipating that the alternate proposals will be addressed at the next meeting with Fonatur.

“I have not had the opportunity to speak with Fonatur, it will surely be next week, and we will touch on the subject. I am in favor of not going through the cities. When the original plan was made, I asked that it not go through Cancun. Here (in Playa del Carmen) the pass is elevated, so we are going to listen to what the agency has to say about it,” he said.

In November, Riviera Maya businessmen submitted a letter to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, among other authorities, requesting a change to the Maya Train route through Playa del Carmen. In their letter, they proposed four alternate routes.
