Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – A shootout at the Las America mall on Friday morning has left at least three injured.
Three security officials were targeted early Friday morning as they carried approximately 1.3 million peso in cash to refill the mall’s ATM machines. The officials were caught by surprise when they were fired upon at around 8:00 a.m.
Members of the municipal police were alerted by the emergency call center about a shooting inside the mall. It was reported that criminals had shot custodians of the Mexican Society of Transfer Securities in an attempted robbery.
The security officials were refilling the ATMs near Chedraui inside the mall when three men approached and began shooting. One of the security officials was shot near his armpit before the other two security officials were able to return fire. Police say about 18 shots were exchanged leaving the other two security officials wounded, one with a gunshot to the leg and the other to his foot.
The gunfire ended in the mall’s parking lot. The assailants fled the scene empty-handed in a red Aveo car which was later found abandoned in a nearby residential area.
