Puerto Morelos, Q.R. – A request to develop artificial reefs in Puerto Morelos has been sent to Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (Semarnat).
The request was made to the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources by a company that has developed numerous other projects of its kind in Australia, the United States and the Philippines, Malaysia and Dominican Republic, among other countries and as well as other areas of Quintana Roo.
If approved, the artificial reefs would be placed in the south portion of Puerto Morelos where there is a major problem with beach erosion. The breakwaters, or reefs, would be 700 meters long by 100 meters wide and be placed 40 meters offshore.
The project developer has been monitoring the area since 2015 with local inspectors verifying that there is little beach left and that artificial reefs would be beneficial. It’s anticipated that the project would cost 2.5 million peso
A review of the project is expected to take between three and four months.
