Cancun, Q.R. – Xcaret’s proposed project of a recreation culture and sports center has been declined due to its Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) by the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).
Semarnat has determined that the project, which was submitted in February, does not apply and therefore, has been denied.
The proposed project was to consist of a sports club and stadium with play areas, swimming pools, sports facilities, roads, walkways and service areas with both landscaped and natural areas. The idea was to provide the state with a sporting and cultural events venue on a large scale.
The project was declined because the Procedure for Environmental Impact Assessment in the General Directorate of Environmental Impact and Risk found that more than 87 percent of the vegetation of the land on which the sports center would be built would be removed.
The project was planned for lot 24 mza 20 in a region of Playa del Carmen that involved 23.34 hectares of land. Of those 23.34 hectares, more than 204,000 square meters of vegetation would have been removed to make room for buildings and walkways.
Xcaret has since withdrawn their proposal.
