Cancun, Q.R. — Another drug cartel leader from the notorious Los Zetas gang has been captured in the city of Cancun.
Officers from the Mexican army along with the Criminal Investigation Agency captured José Giraldo GarcÃa, who went by the alias El Cubano. The wanted gang member has been identified by the federal government as the alleged leader of Los Zetas from the state from Veracruz.
The search and seizure of a known address is what led to the arrest. Along with José Giraldo GarcÃa was the arrest of a second person. A search of the home found numerous packages of drugs, radio communication equipment, computers and an out-of-state vehicle.
Federal officials said that José Giraldo GarcÃa is considered a generator of violence in the states of Veracruz and Quintana Roo and that he is considered responsible for drug trafficking, extortion and oil theft.
Officials report that those arrested were likely subordinates of gang leader Hernán MartÃnez, who was taken into custody on June 29, 2017 by elements of the Criminal Investigation Agency.
In early February, another key Los Zetas member, American José MarÃa Guizar, was arrested by federal forces in Mexico City. Beatriz Moguel Ancheyta, judge of the Federal Criminal Justice Center, ruled that for security reasons, José MarÃa Guizar should remain in the maximum security prison of Altiplano in the State of Mexico.
