Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Another 80 trees have been mysteriously felled along the Playa del Carmen highway for the second time in less than a month.
Civil associations and businesses say they are outraged by the cut trees that this time, were found felled near the Iberostar hotel.
A new legal complaint, which has been signed by the Mexican Association of Arboriculture and the Flora, Fauna and Culture of Mexico, says that this time, 80 trees of various species have been cut down.
At a press conference, the group said, “Due to the large number of trees, the municipal authorities will be given an economic valuation based on the method known as ‘Norma Granada’ accepted internationally to quantify the situation, so that the authority has firm foundations to exercise the corresponding sanctions as outlined in the current legislation.”
Orquídea Trejo Buendía, Director of Environment and Climate Change of Solidarity, said that the complaints are being followed up institutionally to find those responsible. He says that the investigations are being done with the collaboration of Profepa, the PGR, the PPA and the SCT itself.
On July 12, residents work up to find more than 300 healthy trees had been felled along the highway between Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen. Those responsible for cutting the trees have yet to be found.
