Andrés Quintana Roo of Cancún taxi union votes new leader

Cancun, Q.R. — A new representative for the Andrés Quintana Roo of Cancún, the largest organization of workers in the country, has been selected.

With 2,749 votes, Erasmo Avelar Cámara won the election of general secretary in the taxi drivers’ union Andrés Quintana Roo of Cancún, in a union vote on Saturday with just over 59 percent of votes.

According to reports, 4,625 members exercised their union vote, about 56.4 percent of the 8,200 that make up the group. The runner up was Alejandro Peralta with 1,585 votes with former taxi driver Manuel Pérez Castillo coming in a distant third with 268 votes.

Abelar Cámara says that the taxi drivers will continue to fight the presence of Uber in Cancun and that until last October, there were 45 individual Amparo concessions presented to the court by the union of taxi drivers Cancun.

In Quintana Roo, nearly 24,000 families depend on taxi transportation for their likelihood.
