Cozumel, Q.R. – An American man died this week while snorkeling off a beach on the island of Cozumel.
On Tuesday, Emergency 066 received a distress call around 10:00 a.m. when an ambulance was requested for the Playa Uvas Beach club. According to police, the man was swept under by a strong current while snorkeling off the beach.
Paramedics found the man floating in the sea, and although they tried to resuscitate him, the victim had already died from drowning. Reports said that the man identified as 43-year-old Mathew Spencer Smith, was visiting the island with a group for a day of snorkeling.
Mr. Smith was the second drowning victim off the shores of Cozumel this Easter holiday season. On March 18, a 56-year-old American man also drowned while snorkeling.
