American cruise ship passenger medically evacuated at Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A tourist from a Carnival cruise ship was transferred to a Cancun hospital after the ship’s captain requested the medical evacuation.

The captain of Carnival Fantasy made the emergency medical evacuation call to the Isla Mujeres port authority requesting the assistance. The ship, which was located 15 nautical miles north of the island, waited while the Mexican navy headed out to help.

The Secretary of the Navy of Mexico says that naval personnel assigned to the Fifth Naval Region based in Isla Mujeres provided support with the medical evacuation of a male who was on board the cruise ship, Carnival Fantasy.

The assistance was granted after the naval command at Isla Mujeres received the request to transfer a passenger from its vessel after suffering a cardiac emergency. Two navy ships left their Isla Mujeres base to transfer the 54-year-old American passenger to hospital.

There is no word on the condition of the man. It is the third medical evacuation request from passing ships in recent weeks. In October, another cruise ship passing the island requested a medical evacuation for one of its American passengers who also suffered a cardiac emergency.
