Cancun, Q.R. — Then most recent check stops around Cancun ended with more than 100 people being sent to jail.
Over the May 25 to 29 weekend, local authorities pulled over a total of 485 vehicles at check stops around Cancun. Of those pulled over, breathalyzer tests were issued to 253 drivers of which 117 failed.
Drivers failing the breathalyzer test were sent to the Municipal Retention Center (Torito) for driving under the influence. Depending on the degree of blood-alcohol content, jail time ranged from 20 to 36 hours.
On the Thursday and Friday, check stops were set up at the intersection of Leona Vicario Avenues with 31st Street, Kabah Avenue and Nichupte Avenue, as well as at the junction of Coba and Yaxchilan Avenues.
On Saturday and Sunday the operation was set at the junctions of Jose López Portillo Avenue with Nichupté, Tulum and Coba, as well as at the intersection of the Avenue Rancho Viejo and Avenida Arco Vial.
