Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – A massive blue marlin was caught Friday off the beaches of Playa del Carmen by a tour fisherman.
Considered the holy grail of sport fishing in the Riviera Maya, Ricardo Caldelas surprised everyone on Friday when he booked a tour and headed out to sea for a day of sport fishing. At about 11:30 a.m., Mr. Caldelas was trolling in the area of Coco beach when two of his 60-pound lines “caught fire”.
Blue marlin, which are known for putting up a feisty fight, took nearly two hours to reel in. The large fish were hooked at Coco Beach but reeled in several kilometers later at Punta Maromas.
He explained that the marlin they reeled in was still alive and was released, however, the second marlin had drowned so they returned to shore with the marlin to weigh it. That’s when they learned the fish weighed 180 kilograms.
