Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — An accident along the Tulum-Playa del Carmen highway Sunday saw traffic backed up for miles as police tried to sort out the twisted metal of two large vehicles.
A cargo truck and a staff bus belonging to Xcaret crashed head-on Sunday along the Federal Highway near Calica. The accident occurred at approximately 8:00 a.m. when, according to preliminary reports, the driver of the truck fell asleep at the wheel, causing his vehicle to swerve into the oncoming lane.
Firefighters, police and paramedics, who arrived in three ambulances, came to help the injured and free the two men trapped in the front of the cargo truck.
In a statement released by Xcaret, the company says that in total, 18 people were injured with minor contusions. No life threatening injuries were reported.
