15 killed in Nayarit highway bus accident

Mesillas, Nayarit — At least 15 people died and 22 more left injured after the bus they were traveling in hit a tree on Federal Highway 200 in the state of Nayarit.

The State Coordination of Nayarit reported that the accident occurred at 7:18 a.m. along the Tepic-Puerto Vallarta highway near the town of Mesillas.

According to the first reports, the driver lost control of the bus, left the road and hit a tree, which partially split in two. The impact completely overturned the bus, leaving it to land on its roof.

Elements of the emergency corps arrived at the scene and confirmed the death of at least 15 passengers with 22 injured.

The bus driver, identified as Álvaro N, was arrested for the crimes of imprudent homicide and injuries.

The bus had left Aguascalientes and was headed toward Rincon de Guayabitos at the time of the accident.

Civil Protection and Firefighters of Nayarit reported that federal highway 200 was closed due to the accident and reopened to traffic at 1:30 p.m.
