Ecatepec, State of Mexico — The government of the State of Mexico says that a combi accident that occurred in the early morning hours of Friday has left 13 dead.
The accident happened at 5:00 a.m. when a public combi van hit the back of a parked dump truck at high speed. Reports say the combi, which was carrying a load of passengers, tried to pass a car while traveling at excessive speed along the Mexico-Pachuca highway.
The driver of the combi ended up crashing into the back of a broken down dump truck that was parked along side the highway. The government of the State of Mexico says that so far, 13 people have died and another 8 were taken to area hospitals.
They report that 12 people died at the scene, with one more, a woman, dying after being transferred to a Mexico City hospital.
The General Directorate of Federal Autotransport says the accident occurred at kilometer 18 of the Mexico-Pachuca Highway in Ecatepec, when José Luis N, who was driving the combi, tried to pass a car using the right lane. Instead, he encountered the parked dump truck.
Emergency personnel were on scene until 11:30 a.m. Traffic was heavily affected. The driver of the parked dump truck was reported injured. He was also arrested and remains under guard at an area hospital. Investigations continue.
