10 Cancun swimmers required rescues already this holiday season

Cancun, Q.R. — Already this Easter holiday season, 10 people from beaches around Cancun and Isla Mujeres have required the assistance of life guards due to near drownings.

Civil Protections says that as part of their operation during Semana Santa, the Navy has participated in Operation Lifesaver, having assisted in the rescue of 10 people along the beaches.

In a statement, the Navy Secretariat of Mexico says that already this holiday season they have rescued three women and seven men after swimmers experienced problems trying to reach the shore.

Semana Santa 2018 has been put into effect at Playa Delfines in Cancún and at Playa Norte in Isla Mujeres, each of which are popular destinations for vacationing Mexican nationals who come to the area to spend their Easter break.

The waves and undertow of some of the beach areas along Cancun are very strong. Each year, several people drown for either underestimating the waters or for not obeying the flags placed in the sand to warn swimmers of the natural dangers.
