Hotels left without power after CFE station explodes in the Cancun Hotel Zone

Cancun, Q.R. — A transformer fire in facilities of the Federal Electricity Commission in the Cancun Hotel Zone created an intense mobilization of emergency and civil protection services on Monday.

In their preliminary report, the Tourist Police reported the transformer explosion and subsequent fire at the CFE station at kilometer 14 of Kukulkán Avenue. The 1:00 p.m. blaze sent emergency services to the substation where Cancun firemen were successful in extinguishing flames before they spread.

Several hotels were left without electricity as a result of the explosion. CFE personnel said that they were able to restore electricity to those hotels within 26 minutes.

The incident had police, CFE personnel, firefighters and Civil Protection specialists on scene. There was no official word on what caused the explosion. There were no injuries reported.
